mindfulness is a way of balancing what goes on inside us with what goes on around us.
Mindfulness is a type of attention with three distinctive qualities. It’s intentional, present-focused and friendly or caring. We already have mindfulness (it’s a human capacity) though most of us are unfamiliar with or unaware of it. Mindfulness is also a set of practices we engage in, including meditation, to strengthen this capacity and cultivate healthy habits. We learn to remember we have a choice about what to pay attention to and how. Meditation is a formal practice in which we set aside time to cultivate and deepen our awareness (and all the benefits that come along with practice). Sitting and focusing on the breath in the body is a common practice. We are not trying to create a particular experience, generate specific feelings or empty the mind. We are paying attention to things as they are and learning to stay open so that we can choose how to work with whatever arises in meditation, or in life.
Mindfulness is essential for cultivating ease, peace and real happiness in life. Although it's simple, it's not easy. It's the training we never had, and practice helps. When we practice mindfulness, we practice skillfulness. We learn to meet experience in wiser and kinder ways. Over time, we take things for granted less and less and come to enjoy them more and more.

Weekly drop-in classes are suspended during July and August while Mary Ann finishes her book projects. Private/semi-private classes are available by appointment, and special events will continue. See below for list of classes, any one of which can be offered privately to individuals or groups who attend together. All classes are offered by Mary Ann Christie Burnside, EdD, the mindfulness studio’s founding teacher. description of weekly drop-in classes
introduction to mindfulness. Interested in mindfulness but don’t know how or where to start? Come to this intro class to learn a bit about mindfulness and mediation. Mary Ann will also offer an overview of the different classes here at the studio. Intro class includes a brief time of Q&A.
mindfulness of breath. Got mindfulness? Yes, yes you do. Learn to cultivate the awareness you already have in this simple breath meditation class. Mindfulness of breath is an easy practice to learn and the most portable device you will have. Wherever you go, breath and awareness go with you. Practice integrating the two in this class and you’ll discover more and more (and more) of what mindfulness is all about.
relaxing bodyscan. Need to relax? Who doesn't. True relaxation is the result of letting things be. This class offers a guided bodyscan meditation. Show up, lay down and let go. Ends with a brief silent sitting meditation. Mats, blankets and cushions provided.
compassion meditation. This class, which is based on the ground-breaking work of Drs. Chris Germer and Kristen Neff, is a direct training in resilience, a foundation for emotional well-being. We all struggle, there’s no way around that. There is a healthier, kinder way to be with ourselves as we struggle. Come learn how to struggle well and suffer less.
lovingkindness meditation. Mindfulness is not just about awareness. It’s a way of being in and seeing the world that involves heartfulness, which is about friendliness, kindness and good will. Like mindfulness itself, we all have this capacity though it can under-developed when un-attended to. This class will help you cultivate and connect with the power of heartfulness to the benefit of yourself and countless others (no pressure, promise!).

practice groups. These groups are specifically designed for adults with some mindfulness meditation experience who are looking for ongoing support in a practice community. Sessions include formal group practice, discussion of individual practice and a shared theme-based talk that supports members’ intentions to integrate mindfulness with everyday life. Initial commitment is for 6 sessions though members may opt to continue. Groups will begin with as few as four members; space limited to 12 per group. Choose from Monday 7-8 pm, Tues 12-1 pm, Friday 9-10 am. Pre-registration is required.
mommy & me. Bring your young child to this class and practice together. we engage in age-appropriate activities to explore mind-body awareness and learn self-soothing skills. class includes stories and songs. For toddler – Pre-K ages and caregivers. Daddies welcome too. Space limited to 8 children and their grown-ups. Pre-registration is required.
after school mindfulness club. This after school club designed for kids aged 8 - 11 years promotes wellness, resilience and skillfulness through age-appropriate mindfulness practices. Includes activities, songs and games. initial commitment is 6 sessions though members can opt to continue. Offered for students with early release days on Tuesdays ( e.,g., Concord, Arlington) and early release Thursdays (e.,g., Lexington). Space is limited to 12 for each club. Pre-registration is required.
mini retreat. Come join us for a 3-hour mini-retreat on the 2nd Thursday morning of the month. Meditations include alternating guided periods of sitting and walking, eating, speaking and listening. Cushions, mats and blankets provided though feel free to bring your own. Prior experience not required though pre-registration is! All levels welcome. Pre-registration required by 2nd Tuesday of the month.
mindfulness retreat day. Come join us for a 5-hour immersion experience on the 2nd Saturday of the month. We’ll explore mindfulness together through teachings, conversation and practices. Meditations include alternating guided periods of sitting and walking, eating, speaking and listening. The program; which includes time for shared conversation about mindfulness, meditation and more; ends with a guided body scan meditation. Cushions, mats and blankets provided though feel free to bring your own. All levels welcome. Prior experience not required though pre-registration is! Pre-registration required by 2nd Tuesday of the month.
mindfulness for Grades 6-8. This monthly program welcomes youth in Grades 6 - 8 who want to learn about and practice mindfulness together. Come discover what mindfulness is and isn't; learn about the brain and mind; figure out to handle stressful stuff; practice ways to relax and calm down; and build friendly, skillful strategies for balancing things at home, school and elsewhere. Meets the 2nd Saturday of the month from 4-5 pm. Pre-registration required by the second Wednesday of the month.
happy-ness hour for families. In this monthly class designed for children ages 3 -11 and parents/caregivers, we’ll practice mindfulness together through music, movement, play and family-friendly meditations. Offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Pre-registration required by the second Thursday of the month.
